Faculty Summit on Mobile Devices in CS Education

Thursday, June 12, 2008 at the University of Guelph

Introduction

Mobile devices out-ship PCs 20 to 1, and for many students the mobile device is becoming the computer. They are becoming more powerful than the PCs of a few years ago and they represent a useful tool for conveying important computing science concepts. This calls for innovations in the computing science curriculum, especially in the first two years to create a motivating framework for computing students. After all, students expect faculty to integrate cutting-edge technology in the classroom, and the industry expects academia to create the talent that drives innovations in the mobile space.

Objective

The aim of this Faculty Summit is to become a premier event for academics interested in integrating mobile devices across the CS curriculum. It will provide a unique opportunity for computer science educators at the college and university levels to learn about the potential of mobile devices in raising the level of interest and satisfaction among students and providing an inspiring framework for students to be excited about CS education as a challenging subject and a rewarding career goal. Attendees will enjoy a range of talks from researchers, industry speakers, and university faculty members on the integration of mobile devices in CS education, the future of mobile services, and a technical tutorial on developing mobile applications.

This faculty summit will focus on the future of using mobile devices in the CS curriculum. Please join us for an in-depth discussion of the opportunities and challenges surrounding this topic.
